Edison is the vengeful "iron angel", equal parts feared and revered by onlookers. Assumed dead after a startling major incident in a small town, his stark presence generates swathes of hysteria from the sheer absurdity, but no one has ever been able to prove his resurrection, nor has anyone wanted to. He resides in and stalks around a small open-air museum built on a former industrial complex located somewhere in England. Its Victorian town is catered specifically for school trips, one of which he had attended in the past. His consciousness and form is immutably tied to a special place in a twisted, rarefied air, but there is no physical distance between him and the world.

Personality

Ed is a cruel, often indifferent staunch misanthrope, erratic and highly dangerous, and terrorises people for a living. He lives to hurt and be hurt and revels in confusion and sickness. With no regard for outsider input, he cannot be reasoned with or restrained and considers himself completely detached from society. He's intelligent, but not a genius, and is prone to making the wrong decisions, especially with any outside factors at play.

He is appreciative of the arts and often reads, primarily making use of his background to create and mend suits. His unpredictability is a culmination of the pain he experienced through his formative years.

In his façade, he does a 180 and puts on a jovial attitude, superficial enough to chew the fat with visitors and leave no trace of deception. His genuine smiles are short-lived.

Appearance

Edison is a white man of rangy build, with a somewhat tan skin tone, straight neck-length reddish brown hair, and red eyes. He is oftentimes seen without a shirt and with olive green slacks adorned by a regular brown belt with a golden buckle. Sometimes he is fully nude. His entire body is covered in scars, old and new. He has a glassy voice with underlying intensity.

Before his "merge", he had slightly shorter hair and brown eyes, and wore suits provided to him by his father per his standards.

History

Ed was born an only child somewhere in England to Irish-born couple Graham and Linda Carrick, businessman and seamstress respectively. His mother was deemed mentally impaired from birth complications and what had led up to them, rendering her unable to tend to her business and care for Edison throughout his childhood, leaving him to his father and aunt’s care and further straining the marriage. Socially inept and predominantly steered by the adults in his life, Ed had little control over anything he did. For a while, he took over and began to tailor for the local folk.

Behind closed doors, for a good portion of his life, Edison was loaned out to and sexually exploited and trafficked by his father and associates for financial and lecherous gain, subjected to torture and abuse with intervention thwarted at every chance. Not one to just accept these circumstances, he tried to fight back more than once. Every time in retaliation, he would hear something call out for him, and feel a weight around his body, like a shield. In spite of Edison not noticeably being complicit in his newfound power, his father punished him and began to sedate him. Edison’s tutor at the time, Agatha, while aware of the abuse, turned her head at the risk of jeopardising her father's connections.

Years of ceaseless sadism committed against him built up. Subsequently, during a party held in the chamber of where he was kept, a thousand spears erected from the ground. The associates, his parents, and everybody present in the building including himself were mutilated mostly beyond recognition; the building followed, torn bare. The cataclysm ("Tarston disaster") was classed as a tragic collapse attributed to dilapidation. Edison, despite having been decapitated, was the only salvagable body and promptly taken by a coroner to the local morgue.

Not too long after, Edison woke up in a cold room compartment, body and mind seemingly intact. He followed a string of instructions that whisked him out of the clutches of the building and wandered off into the wilderness. With no set destination, he trekked and trekked looking for somewhere to process the events that had unfolded.

Abilities

Ferrikinesis

Edison possesses the ability to manipulate iron at will, whether it is around him or buried deep in the earth, and cannot be wounded by anything that has even the slightest hint of it. He cannot create iron from thin air, but as iron is virtually everywhere, this won't prove an issue. At times, he concocts assorted wrought iron fences, statues, and other miscellaneous ideas as a form of entertainment, although keeps to himself in that regard.

Properties

Psychomancy

Ed is able to tamper with the psyche of anybody within his vicinity. This can span from visual tricks to total degradation of the mind (had he set his eye on somebody in particular). However, he's a glass cannon, especially in this regard; he can't counter attacks had his opponent honed that same power and is incredibly vulnerable to mental shutdown.

Conditional invisibility

Edison's presence is tangible only to those he wishes to torment. When he has set his eye on somebody, he presents himself as amiable "Lance Mitchell", a tour guide and good Samaritan who is beloved by local folk. Slowly, he edges closer to his prey and subjects them to a fatal concoction of calculated psychological torture.

Planar travel

At times, he takes refuge in a metaphysical space spun by the Iron Angel, a macadamised flatland with an endless brick wall held up as its spine. For Edison, it is an resting place, especially for when he's weakened from overuse. The domain was conceived by the original Iron Angel. It is imperiled and intricately designed to stymie the progress of whoever has access.

"Rusting"

Usage of power physically manifests in the form of a widespread third degree burn that spreads from his solar plexus, palms and soles. His markings (or "rusting") are an indication of how much of his power he has been using. The gradation of this process goes as following:

  1. minimal manifestation of ferric stress, "bleeding heart" stage, indicator of soft but repeated usage, easily reversible. something to note is that ed can use iron and not rust; him reaching this stage means that he has consistently made use and is on the path to further degradation. he is able to opt out of the process up until G6
  2. ditto, continued use leads to further bleeding, still reversible but may take a little longer to subside
  3. the "ideal" stage when using ferri, or the stage you'll see on a good day, pain is turned up a notch but not unbearable, some itchiness especially in the chest
  4. a little advanced, fever like symptoms trickle, skin starts to feel thin
  5. bordering on overuse, most of his front is rusted, growing pains
  6. point of no return, locked into process of rusting until incapacitated
  7. ferric potential at peak, strength starts to falter from this point
  8. significant signs of weakness in form and ferri
  9. visibly slow, unable to fight or summon any reasonable pickets that can inflict pain
  10. not long until rust coma

If he maintains the twilight phases (G6-10) for too long, his skin will start to crack/dissipate.

Rust coma

If Edison overexerts himself beyond the twilight phases of rust, then he will subsequently fall into a coma until his energy is back at a feasible level. Depending on the level of usage prior to his coma, it will determine how long it will take for Ed to recuperate completely. It is possible for Ed to wake up in the middle of the process, which would lead to a longer coma.

Random facts (or info I haven't elaborated on)

Q&A

Q. What is the overarching plot? What medium? Etc.
A. Everything is a work in progress and the plot is so flimsy I couldn't even call it one. I won't be documenting it, but I hope I can make something out of it. A comic is in the works..

Q. Can I draw him?
A. Yes!

Q. Is Edison an expy of Legato Bluesummers from Trigun/Sabitsuki from .flow/etc.
A. No, all coincidence, as goes with all of my characters unless specified otherwise. He wasn't formed around anybody in fiction or otherwise; there are personal connotations but that's about the extent of it. I love hearing about characters he's like though (it's actually really useful!)

Q. Why does he look so much like Goro Akechi/Light Yagami/etc.
A. The brown hair red eyes formal attire combo is a force to be reckoned with. Refer to the above question.

Q. Who/what is the "Iron Angel"?
A. It's best described as a parasitic cosmic essence of abstruse nature that merged with Edison in increments. It is not formally known as the "Iron Angel", nor is it actually an angel. It's pure meta, in fact it has no name, and is not referred to or even acknowledged as such in canon. There's no telling how it came to be or why it favoured Ed. All that is known is that it did not feel any particular way towards him and latched onto him much like a leech would. It can be interpreted that it was attracted to Ed's misery. Ed is not possessed. He isn't the only one in the network. There is history that spans back in the form of singularity. Ed is one of many!
